Cold is hard on a battery twice over: at 0 degrees F a battery delivers only about half its rated power, while the engine's oil thickens and needs more power to crank. Why cold is so hard on batteries
A battery makes power through a chemical reaction that slows down as it gets colder. At freezing, available cranking power drops sharply. At the same time, cold thickens the engine oil, so the starter needs more power to turn the engine. Less supply, more demand.

Test a battery that is more than 3-4 years old, clean any corrosion off the terminals, and replace it proactively if it is weak - it is cheaper than a tow. Look up your battery size and CCA, and watch for the signs it is dying.

Why do car batteries die in winter?
Cold slows the chemical reaction inside the battery, so it puts out far less current right when the thick, cold oil makes the engine harder to crank. A battery that was marginal in summer often cannot do both jobs on a freezing morning.
