Signs Your Car Battery Is Dying

The clearest warning signs of a failing car battery are a slow, labored engine crank, dim or flickering lights, a battery warning light on the dash, electronics resetting or acting up, and a battery more than 3-5 years old. Catch these early and you replace it on your terms instead of getting stranded.

  • Slow cranking - the engine turns over sluggishly when you start it.
  • Dim or flickering lights - headlights and dash lights look weak, especially at idle.
  • Battery warning light - the dashboard battery symbol comes on.
  • Electronics acting up - windows, locks, radio, or screens glitch or reset.
  • Clicking when you turn the key - often a battery too weak to crank.
  • Swollen case or smell - heat or a failing cell; replace immediately.
  • Age - over 3-5 years old is on borrowed time.

What to do

Have the battery load-tested (free at most parts stores). If it fails, replace it with the correct group size and a cold cranking amps (CCA) rating that meets or exceeds your vehicle's spec. Going below the OEM CCA risks hard starts, especially in winter.
